Background

As today (October 23) has been newly declared National Horror Movie Day, today’s post looks at one of my recent favorites of the genre, the 2017 psychological thriller Get Out.

Filmed in only 23 days from his own Oscar-winning original screenplay, Jordan Peele’s directorial debut follows Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya), a levelheaded black photographer from Brooklyn who accompanies his new girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) upstate to meet her family for the first time.

Chris spends a strange first evening with the suspiciously affable Armitages, including her gregarious father Dean (Bradley Whitford) who proudly declares he “would’ve voted for Obama for a third term if I could” and psychiatrist mother Missy (Catherine Keener), who subjects Chris to an emotional late-night hypnosis that invites him to “the sunken place”.

The next morning, he rises early to snap a few photos of the woods outside the Armitage estate but catches more of the consistently odd behavior from the Armitages’ black staff, namely the housekeeper Georgina (Betty Gabriel) and groundskeeper Walter (Marcus Henderson). The events just get weirder as the Armitages’ guests gather that day for their family’s annual gathering of friends. A tradition started by Rose’s grandfather—who may or may not be present—the “shindig” turns out to be far more sinister than just the promised badminton, bocce, and bingo.

What’d He Wear?

Costume designer Nadine Haders explained to Brooke Bobb for Vogue how color informed her costume choices for Chris in Get Out. “Blue was the color of his urban life, his true self. He wore the blue chambray shirt whenever he wasn’t at his apartment in Brooklyn, sort of a signifier of where he came from and how he wants people see him,” shared Haders. “At the Armitages’ house, his ‘cozy clothes’ are gray—you see him wearing this when he sits in the hypnosis session with Missy. It’s a color that exists in a world between black and white.”

Through the action-packed second half of Get Out, Chris wears a blue neckband shirt open over a light heather gray short-sleeved crew-neck T-shirt—the same style as the T-shirt he’d worn under his hoodie of the same color the previous night.

The blue shirt uniquely blends fashion-forward elements like its neckband collar with function-informed workwear details like the lightweight denim cloth and snap-front. The front placket has seven pearl-finished nickel snaps, matching the single snap on each cuff that Chris wears undone and rolled up over his forearms. (A Spotern user positively identified the denim shirt as a product of French fashion label The Kooples.)

After an afternoon of increasing weirdness, Chris resolves to stay with Rose.

Chris wears dark indigo denim jeans, dyed a finish so dark that I thought they were black for much of their screen appearance. These jeans are styled in the traditional five-pocket layout, with two patch-style back pockets and two curved front pockets with a small coin pocket (or watch pocket) inset on the right side. (Spotern also has these identified as the FRAME L’Homme Skinny-Leg Jeans but in the charcoal “Whiskey Town” wash rather than their true dark blue.)

Chris holds up his jeans with a tan leather belt that closes through a large brass oval-shaped buckle.

Chris falls into the sunken place.

Throughout the weekend, Chris wears sturdy Red Wing 8111 Iron Rangers work boots, a style dating back to the 1930s when the Minnesota-based footwear company launched them for iron miners. Built with a Goodyear welt and Puritan triple-stitch construction, these six-inch boots are characterized by the distinctive toe-cap and derby-laced arrangement of four sets of eyelets and three sets of speed hooks above them. Leather insoles and cork midsoles provide added comfort, anchored to a Vibram® 430 mini-lug outsole.

Chris’ Iron Ranger oiled full-grain leather uppers are a russet-brown shade that Red Wing calls “amber harness”, laced through the nickel eyelets and speed hooks with aftermarket blue nubuck laces.

Note the Red Wing logo inside the tongues of Chris’ boots.

On his left wrist, Chris wears a pair of bracelets. The forward-most bracelet is a strap of medium-brown leather, with a narrower strap of the same leather fastened through a brass squared single-prong buckle and matching keeper to secure it onto his wrist. Behind it, he wears a plain brass bangle.

Chris finds that his phone (a Microsoft Lumia!) has been again unplugged from its charger, though at least Georgina can assure him that there was no… funny business.

How to Get the Look
