Background
Happy birthday to Daniel Kaluuya, who received his first Academy Award nomination for Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out, released on Kaluuya’s 28th birthday seven years ago today.
Peele won the Oscar for his original screenplay, centered around Brooklyn photographer Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) joining his new girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) to meet her parents Dean (Bradley Whitford) and Missy (Catherine Keener) for the first time. Despite the family’s initial affability, Chris increasingly comes to recognize something more sinister beneath Dean’s unprompted insistence that he “would have voted for Obama for a third term” and Missy’s unsolicited late-night hypnotic therapy.
What’d He Wear?
Chris comfortably layers for the journey upstate, building on his base outfit of a blue shirt and dark jeans. Costume designer Nadine Hader explained to Brooke Bobb for Vogue the intentionality behind the colors she chose as “blue was the color of his urban life, his true self.”
For the initial drive and first day of their visit, Chris wears a mid-blue slubbed cotton long-sleeved henley shirt that has a short placket of three smoke-gray plastic buttons.
Rose makes a point of asking Chris if he brought his “cozy clothes”, evidently the gray T-shirt and sweatpants to match the zip-up hoodie he wears for their car ride upstate. Haders shared that the gray was intentional as “it’s a color that exists in a world between black and white.”
The light heather gray hooded sweatshirt is made from a lightweight cloth, likely either cotton or a “cozy” cotton/polyester blend. The straight front zip is mid-blue, matching the flat mid-blue woven drawstrings that pull through the nickel-toned eyelet on each side of the hood.
Chris’ outer layer is a hip-length jacket made from a large-scaled brown and black buffalo plaid, each square framed by a muted, multi-tonal graph check. The collared jacket has a five-button front placket and beige contrast stitching along the edges and seams, including along the straight shoulder yoke reinforcing the upper back. The set-in sleeves are finished with single-button squared cuffs. The two patch-style pockets over the chest each close with a single button through a pointed flap, complemented by jetted pockets at hand level with a subtly slanted vertical entry.
Chris’ dark indigo five-pocket jeans are made from a stretchy cotton blend, suggested by Spotern to be the FRAME L’Homme Skinny-Leg jeans, likely in the dark indigo “Edison” wash. (This is reinforced by the glimpse we get of FRAME’s signature olive-green reverse side where the bottoms of his jeans are cuffed into his boots.)
Assuming he wears the same belt as he would the following day, Chris holds the jeans up with a tan leather belt that closes through a large brass-toned oval-shaped buckle.
Chris’ jewelry consists of a silver box-chain link necklace and two bracelets on his left wrist. The foremost bracelet features a strap of medium-brown leather secured with a brass squared single-prong buckle and matching keeper. Behind it, he wears a simple brass bangle. with etchings across the top.
