Background
When I think about which Succession character most shares my sense of style (as one does), I’m realizing that the answer—for better or worse—is probably the doomed presidential hopeful Connor Roy (Alan Ruck).
It makes sense, as each of us are positioned relatively far from the corporate world and thus can afford to dress more for ourselves than any greater ambition… at least until Connor, who was interested in politics at a young age, starts pinning that American flag to his lapel as he hits the campaign trail.
This thought reoccurred to me as I was packing for my weeklong vacation to the beach this week, and I realized that the only Roy who may canonically share my affinity for printed summer shirts is the [actual] eldest son, who briefly sports a sailboat-printed shirt while the family debriefs in Tuscany over a game of Monopoly at the start of Succession’s third season finale, “All the Bells Say”.
What’d He Wear?
A sailboat-printed cotton shirt screams “vacation”, even if its aquatic theme may seem insensitive given his half-brother Kendall (Jeremy Strong) almost drowning the prior day. The excellent @successionfashion Instagram account identified this as a Polo Ralph Lauren shirt, though Connor’s screen-worn button-up differs from the polo shirt pictured in the post.
This white-and-blue design of sailboats navigating wavy seas against a navy-blue ground was frequently used by Polo Ralph Lauren on polos, button-ups, and even T-shirts, though its the “featherweight mesh” cotton polo shirts that seem most prevalent on the secondhand market (as seen here, here, and here on Poshmark… and here and here on eBay.)
Connor’s short-sleeved shirt has a classic “resort”-style flat camp collar and white four-hole buttons up the plain front.
Connor complements the white shades of the sailboat print and nods to the vacation vibes with his white linen trousers. Little is seen of these as he spends the entirely of the scene with his shirt untucked over the top of the trousers, but, assuming that these are the same trousers he wore with his magenta knit long-sleeved polo in the previous episode, they may have pleats as well as side pockets and narrow-welted back pockets with a button through the left one. They have a straight cut down to the bottoms, which are finished with narrow turn-ups (cuffs) and break high enough to show that he’s either sockless or wearing no-show socks with his loafers.
The shoes in question are driving moccasins, a popular variation of the classic slip-on moccasin characterized by rubber-padded soles. Connor’s dark-brown grain leather drivers have separated pads on the soles rather than the spoke-like “rubber-dotted” soles also used on driver mocs.
Unlike his status-chasing siblings in their luxury timepieces, Connor doesn’t often wear a watch. His black acetate wayfarer-style sunglasses are on the table in front of him, but—unlike his younger half-brother Roman (Kieran Culkin)—he doesn’t actually wear them during the scene.
The frame has been identified on Reddit as the Garrett Leight Troubadour, which Mia Burton describes as referencing “a chic ’60s rock persona with their subtle vintage charm inspired by the timeless style of Bob Dylan,” which would unironically appeal to Connor without him realizing that he’s exactly the kind of guy Bob Dylan would hate.
